Director of Marketing

FUSE Corps is a national nonprofit that partners with local governments to help urban communities thrive. We work with cities and counties to address their most urgent priorities in areas such as jobs, housing, healthcare, education, and justice reform. Our approach is based on an executive fellowship program that provides local government with the experienced leadership needed to accelerate institutional change and reduce racial disparities in their communities. Since our founding in 2012, FUSE has managed over 200 projects across 35 cities in 15 states, impacting the lives of more than 25 million people.

FUSE is in the process of significantly increasing our work across the country in order to advance a more equitable recovery from the current pandemic and its economic fallout. Several philanthropic institutions have ramped up their support to drive this expansion to new cities throughout the South and Midwest. We have also launched a major new partnership with a globally-recognized celebrity who is committed to advocating for policy change and public awareness around the most powerful solutions emerging from American cities. These partnerships will amplify FUSE’s ability to influence and inspire the approaches that civic leaders across the country are employing in response to both long-established inequities and rapidly emerging challenges.

Role and Responsibilities

The Director of Marketing is a new role that will help position FUSE as a more nationally prominent source of the leaders and ideas that are shaping the future of American cities. The Director will create and implement a strategic marketing plan that assess and leverages current marketing and communications practices, pursues new approaches to brand-building, and advances the organization’s overall goals. Reporting to the Vice President of Programs & Communications, the Director will take an internally client-focused approach to advancing and aligning the work of our sales, fundraising, recruitment, and program teams. The ultimate purpose of the marketing function is to increase FUSE’s impact and sustainability. Responsibilities will include:

Develop and implement a strategic marketing strategy. Define goals and tactics for this new function based on an understanding of the organization’s strategy, needs, and emerging opportunities. Conduct market research to determine the best means of positioning FUSE as a partner-of-choice for our target clients. Develop a multiple touch-point engagement strategy within key audiences. Ensure that the outreach campaigns around FUSE’s solutions-journalism and storytelling efforts are measurably contributing to sales, fundraising, and recruitment. Identify opportunities to raise FUSE’s profile through relationships with strategic partners. Develop and implement a strategy to clarify our brand promise and raise brand awareness in target audiences. This will include an effort to revise and clarify the way FUSE articulates and communicates about its work, values, impact, and long-term vision.

Strengthen organization-wide marketing capabilities. Create systems to help all FUSE team members understand and utilize aligned messages to influence different audiences; conduct training and capacity building so that more members of the FUSE community can be spokespeople for the organization in a variety of forums ranging from sales calls to national conferences; create tools that enable staff to rapidly modify collateral, infographics, web content, messaging, and other methods to meet urgent business needs; ensure website and communications materials support business objectives; assess and utilize existing skills among staff and partners that are capable of advancing marketing and sales goals, while determining the most effective means to address capacity gaps within the organization.

Lead and develop social media and digital communication campaigns. Support business development activities to increase awareness of FUSE among potential customers (government agency leaders) and investors (philanthropic institutions and individuals). Assist Recruiting team with designing and executing marketing strategies to attract talent for fellowship roles. Maintain and enhance social media platform presence and marketing strategies, and oversee SEO optimization and limited advertising budgets.

Expand media and public relations. Increase positive mentions of FUSE and its work in a variety of news outlets and media platforms at the local and national levels. Establish and execute on a public relations outreach strategy to secure earned media coverage and prepare staff and fellows for interviews. Continue to develop and publish FUSE-generated articles and stories.

Develop measurable objectives and data analytics to measure effectiveness. Establishing the measurable goals for this new function; the systems to run tests and experiments that enable FUSE to hone the effectiveness of marketing and outreach efforts; and mechanisms for better understanding how/why audiences engage with FUSE and to what effect. Leverage this information for the purposes of continuous learning and improvement.


Location: Flexible. FUSE currently operates as a virtual organization and this position can be based from a home office in any location.
