McKenzie Smith is a principal at Luminate, where she focuses most of her time leading the U.S. region’s early stage investments in civic tech companies and advancing Luminate’s civic empowerment strategy goals. She also manages a small portfolio of nonprofits.
Prior to joining Luminate, McKenzie was a manager on Omidyar Network’s impact investing team, where her work helped accelerate the growth of the impact investing market, drawing on lessons from the firm’s more than $1 billion in investments to attract new players and sources of capital to the field. In this role, McKenzie also supported portfolio organizations, research projects, and thought leadership initiatives to help the impact market function more efficiently. Earlier in her career, she spent several years as a consultant with PricewaterhouseCoopers, where she managed projects for public sector and nonprofit clients to address challenges related to strategy and growth, organizational design, and large program and project management to improve service delivery. McKenzie also worked with Edge Growth, where she helped early stage businesses in South Africa and Tanzania wrestle with challenges like leadership and culture, growth strategy, operational maturity, and systems for execution management.
