Innovative Strategies to Equitably Broaden Economic Prosperity Post-Pandemic

Nashville is a major center for the music industry, home to numerous colleges and universities, a hotbed for technology and startups – drawing companies like Amazon and Oracle – and has thriving healthcare, financial, and tourism sectors that draw national attention. Given this, Nashville has been a hot spot for people moving from other cities and states. However, this growth is not without its challenges. Nashville faces jarring economic and income inequalities, with many residents, especially Black residents, sidelined from prosperity. Over the last year, the Covid-19 pandemic, with its dual public health and economic crises, has disproportionately impacted low-income and Black residents, threatening both increases in these disparities and the broader economic growth of the region.

With all Covid-related restrictions lifted as of May, Nashville is preparing for an immense economic rebound. To ready the metro for accelerated growth post-pandemic, with this growth centered in equity, Nashville must revamp its approach to economic development. FUSE will partner with Nashville to develop and implement the city’s first-ever economic development strategic plan. FUSE will move the city from immediate economic recovery from Covid-19, to an innovative system that expands economic prosperity throughout the region.
